How do I find my UTR Number

Not everyone has a UTR number. If you have registered to complete a self assessment tax return, you should have a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number.  If you do not complete a tax return usually you will not have one.

Your UTR number is isused by HMRC (often known as the Inland Revenue) and it is a unique 10 digit ID, for example ’1234567890′.  HMRC  use your UTR number to identity you and your tax records.

Where to find your UTR Number

If you have registered for self assessment you can find your UTR number in a number of locations including:

  • On your Tax Return – Inland Revenue Form SA100
  • On a ‘Notice to Complete a Tax Return’ – Inland Revenue Form SA316
  • Statement of Account

Depending on which of the above forms you use, your UTR number may be located next to one of the following headings:

  • Tax Reference
  • UTR
  • Offical Use

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to leave them in the comments below and we will do our best to answer them.

    is it me or is getting in touch with the tax office becoming more and more of a sore rectum, basically we get swindled out ridiculous amounts of money throughout our lives, when we need help we’re led a merry dance through the garden that is automated telephone exchanges, i’m certain these processes are in place to confuse, load of B.S, all i wanted was to confirm my UTR. glad i’m not hard of hearing cos the reception on the phone line was like listening to a fart in a russian submarine halfway round the world, without radar! hopefully got my info here tho so thanks so so much! i dont know what i’d do without TAXATION!

      Yes I have tried to contact them repeatedly without any success, you are quite right. Without them actually answering the phone thy cannot actually get my tax money though which is a little concerning. I hope I will not end up before the courts for none payment of tax when I’m desperately trying to do the right thing and pay it -just not getting anywhere!

    I am self-employed and have registered as Sole Trader for couple years now.
    I’ve carried out jobs, sent invoice to customers and they paid;
    BUT now there is 1 customer/company asking for my UTR and my NI numbers, before paying it! (I completed the job over 1 month ago!)

    I’ve read from this link:
    that the UTR is Confidential!

    My question is: Am I obligated to give these details out or I can refuse them “point blank” and insist them to pay as per my Invoice?

    Please help as I need them to pay me a.s.a.p.

    Now I have applied for and recevied a permanent NI number. Does my UTR change? If so, how can I get that? Do I have to create new account for online services?

      If you will take your time to carefully read the ‘paper’ how you call it, you can actually SEE the UTR number, which is the so called ‘reference’. the text should be something like…’(UTR) shown above at ‘Our ref’…..meaning that the ref of the letter is the UTR….simple…isn’t it?!

    I’ve never done a tax return before – I was employed by two businesses last year and registered for self-assessment online just now. I was issued with a ten digit number, copied it to my email, and am now submitting it as my UTR. If the number was indeed the UTR, why isn’t it working? If it wasn’t my UTR, I did not submit a home address or any other contact details other than an email address, so how can they send it to me? The whole thing is very confusing!

    Just to clarify – a corporate UTR number may appear on a various HMRC Correspondence as part of a larger reference number. e.g.;

    623 12345 67890 A 05

    In this case the first 3 digits are the tax region – then next 10 digits are the UTR (12345 67890)
