UTR Numbers For the Self Employed

self employed UTR

If you are self employed and you are looking for a UTR number, you need to know that the process is not as difficult as a lot of people tend to believe. Being self employed is one of the things that many people desire. The fact that you are your own boss, that you set your own goals, and that you work for yourself, are some of the most tempting features of working for yourself. However, it is also important to note that being self employed comes with its own responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is that you have to sort your own tax matters.

The first thing that you need to do in order to get your Unique Taxpayer Reference number, as someone who is self employed, is to ensure that you get in touch with the tax office and you notify them of the fact that you are working for yourself. Once you notify them about this, they will then send you a unique 10 digit number which they will use in their correspondence to you.

How long will it take to get a UTR Number?

The whole process normally takes around four weeks, but often tax offices can have delays (especially at the end of the tax year) and because of this it can sometimes take longer. You can contact your local tax office on the phone or by post if you want to check the status of your number.

Safety

It is important to note that no matter how eager you are to get your UTR number, it is not possible to get one online or over the phone directly. You will only be able to receive the information through the mail. Although this might cause you some delay and some inconvenience, it is important to keep in mind the fact that this is actually being done for your own safety.

Confidentiality

Once your UTR number arrives, it is important to realize that you need to keep it in a safe place. Being self employed may result in you having to give your UTR number to your accountant or other organizations which could put you in a tricky position. It is up to you to determine whether you are willing to provide your UTR number to these organizations, and remember to only give it to people you trust or who are authorised to see it.

I have been employed for the last 7 years and want to start my own business. How do I get a self employmenet number?

Sara: Your local town or city should have a tax office. Contact your nearest tax office and let them know that you want to apply for a UTR number. They should be able to help you obtain one.

Isn’t there any way to get the UTR faster? Someone told me that you can go in person at an office and get it straight away is that true? i looked all over the web and i couldn’t find any relevant info.

    Thank you.

I was trying to self-assess online for tax return, as I might have overpaid a little, but website wants the UTR number.
I have payslips, P45,P60s, but I can’t find it. The only number that says Tax Reference has a “/” and letters on it.
Do I need to ask for one if I want to do it online?

I registered as self-employed on 19.10.2010 and still have not received a UTR number. Is this unusual? Also, am I to fill out a self assessment for 2011, or will my first assessment be for 2012 as I have only been registered from October 2010 until now, January 2011.

    Thank You

sumesh: I would contact your local tax office where you registered as self employed and see if they can chase this up. We are not HMRC, we are just an information website that helps people with their UTR problem.

it’s easy to register for a UTR but difficult to get one so far I have been waiting a month

also after registering as self employed they have sent me a national insurance bill but not the form to apply for the exemption as a low earner (my self employment is infrequent and in spare time, I work full time at near minimum wage) I cannot pront the online version as I don’t own a printer or have access to one and you must part complete the form online before it lets you commence printing and you cannot save it to email it to a comp with a printer !!!

further more one major client is insisting I provide a UTR before they pay me but there is little or no legal information online on the HRMC website that lets me know were I stand

    all very confusing :(

I’ve applied for a UTR in January, and I’m still waiting (it’s March). However, I *was* self-employed five years ago, and informed HMRC at the time that I was entering full employment for another company and that I would be no longer self-employed.

Is my old UTR still valid?

I’ve also been told by HMRC that I have to pay for a non-payment of S.E. tax for last year – when I was employed by a university, and not in any way self-employed… what do I do?

    Many Thanks.

I’m really keen to sign off JSA and onto working tax credits, working 30+ straight away at starting up my own internet business
This 4-8 week wait for a UTR is very off putting, as I’ll have to sign off all benefits during that period.

As an unemployed JSA signee do I have a tax code I could use on the WTC form instead of a UTR? I worked a year ago, could I use my old tax code? Or maybe there’s a grace period for JSA? Anything to close the gap, please!
