The first thing that you should do when you want to get a unique tax reference is to determine if you have ever applied for one before. If you have completed a tax return previously, then it is most likely that you will have one. Check the top left corner of your tax return and you will see a ten digit number. If you cannot find your tax return, you can also look at any statements that you have received from HMRC and any other correspondence that you might have received from them.
If after looking through your documents and tax returns and you still cannot find it, simply call your local tax office and ask them for your Unique Tax Reference and it will be sent to you within a few days.
On the other hand, if you have never had a UTR number and you have just started working for the first time in your own business, then you are required to register for a UTR number immediately. Once you apply for it, you should receive it within a few weeks from HMRC (usually four weeks).
It is important to note that whether or not you are a student, it is extremely important that you keep your UTR number in a secure place. And although you might not be having much money, it is still important that your privacy is maintained. Do not let people access it. This is because if they do, they may be able to access your records, something that is very private and confidential. Your UTR number is so confidential that the tax office will not send it to you through email or on telephone, and will only do it through the mail.
